Details
We have a wooded hunt area of 125 acres. If possible, you should walk around the area to get familiar with it before your hunt and pick out the animal you want. There are some bulls in the herd which we are reserving for future breeding and will not be able to be hunted. You will always have staff with you at the ranch when you are hunting. We will get the animal out of the pen after your hunt and deliver your animal to the processor of your choice. the Hunter's Cabin is available for you during your stay.
Best time the year to hunt?
We recommend hunting when the temps start to get towards 32 degrees as this helps maintain the quality of the meat. So here in Palmer, we see that typically starting in mid October. This is also the time year when they are ready for winter and as heavy as they will be. The winter weight makes the meat rich and flavorful . We can hunt anytime of the year.
Shooting Test
We have you do a shooting accuracy test so we are sure the animal has quick death which will maintain the quality of the meat. Animals that are stressed at harvest have a lower quality of meat. So here's what you need to do:
Rifle hunting: 3 consecutive shots in a 6 inch circle at 100 yards
Bow hunting: 3 consecutive shots in a 6 inch circle at 40 yards
Rifle hunting: 3 consecutive shots in a 6 inch circle at 100 yards
Bow hunting: 3 consecutive shots in a 6 inch circle at 40 yards
Just want Elk Meat?
If hunting is not your thing, but you love elk meat - we can take your order for elk quarters. We generally sell by the single hanging quarter but you can buy several quarters if you like. The quarters are weighed and cost tabulated when they are delivered to the processor. The cost is $12/ lb. A dressed cow elk can weigh anywhere from 175 to 395 pounds. Our elk average about 250 lbs hanging weight for the whole carcass. Quarters average 60 - 70 lbs. Hanging weight is what is left of the animal after the viscera, hide, hooves, etc. are removed. We harvest when there is snow on the ground and will deliver your quarter (s) to the processor of your choice. You can talk with them about what cuts you would like, etc. We recommend Pioneer Meats. We have had great service from them in the past. Their web address is https://pioneermeatsofalaska.com/ for more information. To reserve a quarter, we need a deposit of $375 and the remainder when we have a date of delivery for the quarter to the processor.
